Charles E. Kohlhase was born August 15, 1935 in Knoxville, Tennessee. He earned a bachelor of science degree in physics from Georgia Tech in 1957 and a special master's of science degree from UCLA in 1968. After spending two years in the U.S. Navy, Kohlhase joined the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in 1959. Kohlhase was associated with the Mariner and Viking Projects before Voyager.
